Have you watched the news today and seen the information regarding the NHS Maternity services. Has it left you feeling anxious and frustrated?
Over the past few weeks, many of us have watched heartbreaking stories unfold across the news regarding maternity services in the UK. Reports have highlighted women feeling unheard, families left devastated, and investigations revealing serious failings within some NHS maternity services. The recent national reviews have described issues including women not being listened to, staffing pressures, inequalities in care and the need for widespread improvements across maternity services. Thankfully, these reports have also prompted the Government to commit to significant reforms aimed at making maternity care safer for every mother and baby.
If you’re pregnant right now, it’s completely understandable if these headlines have left you feeling frightened.
Perhaps you’re lying awake at night wondering…
“Will anyone listen to me?”
“Will my baby be safe?”
“What if something goes wrong?”
“Should I even be reading these stories?”
Firstly, I want you to know this.
Your feelings are valid.
Pregnancy is a time when your emotions are naturally heightened. Your body is changing, your hormones are shifting, and your maternal instinct is already working hard to protect your little one. Constant exposure to distressing news stories can easily trigger fear and anxiety, even when your own pregnancy is progressing beautifully.
Remember, These Stories Are Not Every Story
While recent investigations have rightly highlighted areas where maternity care must improve, it’s also important to remember that the vast majority of women in the UK still go on to have safe pregnancies and healthy births with compassionate midwives, obstetricians and maternity teams supporting them every day. Health leaders continue to encourage women to attend all antenatal appointments and to speak up whenever they have concerns.
Please don’t let fear rob you of the joy of meeting your baby.
Your Voice Matters
One of the strongest messages to come from these reports is that women deserve to be listened to.
I couldn’t agree more.
You know your body better than anyone else.
If something doesn’t feel right…
If your instincts tell you something has changed…
If you’re worried…
Speak up.
Ask questions.
Seek clarification.
Take someone with you to appointments if it helps you feel supported.
Never feel that you’re “making a fuss.”
You and your baby matter.
Supporting You Emotionally During Pregnancy
Alongside your maternity care team, many women find enormous comfort in having someone outside the medical system who will simply listen.
Sometimes you don’t need another leaflet.
Sometimes you don’t need Google.
Sometimes you just need someone who hears your fears without judgement.
If you would like to seek an Independent midwife I can recommend Lucy Moggridge at Mind, Body, Birth in Pulborough. Check out her website here for more information https://mindbodybirthservices.co.uk/
This is where I often help expectant mums.
As a homeopath, I provide a safe, calm space where you can talk openly about your worries, birth anxieties and emotional wellbeing. Being listened to can be incredibly healing in itself.
How Homeopathy May Help
Pregnancy brings huge physical and emotional changes, and while every pregnancy is unique, many women seek gentle complementary support alongside their NHS maternity care.
Following an individual consultation, homeopathy may be used to support common pregnancy concerns such as:
Anxiety and overwhelm
Fear of labour or childbirth
Difficulty sleeping due to racing thoughts
Emotional ups and downs
Feeling tearful or lacking confidence
Feeling emotionally prepared for birth
Because homeopathy is tailored to the individual, no two women necessarily receive the same remedy. The focus is always on treating the person as a whole rather than simply a list of symptoms.
Homeopathic care is designed to complement—not replace—your medical maternity care. Any concerns about your pregnancy, baby’s movements or your health should always be discussed promptly with your midwife, GP or maternity unit.
You Don’t Have To Carry Your Fears Alone
Pregnancy should never feel like something you have to survive.
You deserve support.
You deserve reassurance.
You deserve someone who listens.
Whether you’re newly pregnant, approaching birth or simply feeling overwhelmed by everything you’re hearing in the media, know that there is support available.
Sometimes, having a compassionate conversation can make all the difference.
A Gentle Reminder
Try to protect your peace.
Limit how much distressing news you consume.
Spend time connecting with your growing baby.
Go for gentle walks.
Practice breathing exercises.
Listen to calming music or meditations.
Surround yourself with people who leave you feeling supported rather than fearful.
Your baby feels your love far more than your worries.
